NYC Safe Motorcycling Tips

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers these 10 important safety tips to motorists to helps keep our motorcycle riders safe:

  • Because of their small size, motorcycles might look farther away than they actually are. It may also be difficult to judge their speed. When observing traffic to turn at an intersection or into, or out of, a driveway always predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks.
  • There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on our roads. Many drivers don't "recognize" a motorcycle. They're often overlooked in traffic. Always look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection.
  • Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or rolling off the throttle. This does not activate the brake light. This is why it is important to allow more following distance, about 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, assume that a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.
  • Again, because of their small size a motorcycle may seem to be traveling faster than they really are. Do not assume all motorcyclists are speed demons.
  • Their small size can make a motorcycle easily hidden in a car's blind spots or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car. Take an extra moment, and a second look, to thoroughly check traffic.
  • When a motorcycle is in motion, think of it as a person; not as a motorcycle.
  • Motorcyclists often adjust their position within a lane to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. It is important to understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position with a purpose and not to be reckless or show off.
  • While maneuverability is one of a motorcycle's better characteristics, it's important not to expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way.
  • Turn signals on a motorcycle usually do not self-cancel and riders sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle's signal is for real.
  • The stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as it is for a car, but wet pavement makes stopping much more difficult. For this reason, allow more following distance.
